“The medical literature tells us that the most effective ways to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s are through healthy diet and exercise. Our bodies have evolved to move, yet we now use oil energy instead of muscles to do our work.”
As a pre-medical student, I’m used to hours in the laboratory, study sessions in hushed libraries and mind-numbing lectures. Moral of the story: I love to get out and move. Fresh air keeps my mind sharp, cheeks flushed and mood lifted. When school is in session, exercise is my stimulant of choice.
No matter what demand is placed upon us, physical exercise helps us rise to the challenge. Physical exercise may not mean a marathon or a dumbbell workout in the gym (boring!). Exercise can be as simple as a gentle run in the woods. A walk with a pet. A rock-climbing session in a national park. No matter the exercise, the point remains: get outdoors (as much as possible), get moving.
After I hit the gym or finish a hot yoga ‘sesh, my sense of accomplishment reminds me: humans are designed to move. Let’s sweat it out!
LEARN: 2 WAYS TO FIT EXERCISE INTO YOUR LIFE
• Rise, Shine, Stretch.
When you wake up, take a second to stretch your arms and legs. If you do a few quick stretches, your blood circulation will be increased and much more alert during your morning commute.
• Park as Far Away As Possible.
Every bit of exercise helps. When shopping or doing errands, park your car as far away as possible from store entrances. You will have to walk farther to get to the door, but your figure will be the better for it—better yet, walk to easily (and safely) accessible destinations.
